Welcome back, photographers! We’ve talked about storytelling and capturing pet personalities (shoutout to Cocoa and Harley!). Today, we’re talking about the one thing that can turn a "good" photo into a "breathtaking" one: Light.

In the photography world, there is a legendary time of day called The Golden Hour. If you’ve ever seen a photo where the colors are warm, the shadows are soft, and everything seems to glow, it was probably taken during this window.

What is the Golden Hour?

The Golden Hour happens twice a day:

  1. The first hour after the sun rises.

  2. The last hour before the sun sets.

When the sun is low on the horizon, the light has to travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, which filters out the harsh blue light and leaves you with soft reds, oranges, and yellows.

Why It’s Better Than Midday Light

Have you ever taken a photo at noon and noticed everyone has dark shadows under their eyes? That’s "Harsh Light." Golden Hour light is "Diffused Light." It’s flattering for people, animals, and landscapes because it doesn't create those jagged, dark shadows.

Tips for Your Next Golden Hour Shoot:

  • Backlighting: Position your subject between you and the sun. This creates a beautiful "rim light" around their hair or fur. It’s how I get those glowing shots of the dogs in the yard!

  • Watch the Clock: The "Golden Hour" doesn't always last a full hour. Depending on where you live and the time of year, it might only be 20 or 30 minutes. Use an app to check exactly when the sun sets and get there 15 minutes early to set up.

  • The "Blue Hour": Don't pack up as soon as the sun disappears! The 20 minutes after sunset is called the "Blue Hour." The sky turns a deep, moody blue, which is perfect for silhouette shots or "quiet" photos like the ones we talked about for Sky.

Photography Challenge:

This week, try to take the same photo twice: once at noon and once during the Golden Hour. Notice the difference in the shadows and the colors. Which one tells a better story?

I’d love to see your Golden Hour glow-ups! Send your best shots to everythinginbetween55@gmail.com!
